Born from the spirit of the American Revolution in 1776, not only did the famous Declaration of Independence come to life, but also the legendary whiskey brand of the Pepper family. Founded by Elijah Pepper (Distiller from 1776 to 1838), the family legacy was later taken over by Oscar Pepper (Distiller from 1838 to 1867), before Colonel James E. Pepper (Distiller from 1867 to 1906) brought the brand into the 20th century.
Colonel James E. Pepper, hailing from Kentucky, was a bourbon aristocrat of the highest caliber and a prominent figure in American industry. He traveled in his private railway car, bred thoroughbreds for the Kentucky Derby, and led his grandfather’s brand to its greatest successes. It was James E. Pepper who gave his whiskey the name “Old 1776,” proudly referencing the recipe from the Revolutionary Era.
Ultimately, the cult brand 1776 Whiskey was acquired by Georgetown Trading Co., a company whose roots also trace back to the time of the American Revolution. After extensive research, they were able to locate and analyze original bottlings of the whiskey from before, during, and after Prohibition. Georgetown Trading Co. even acquired a letter personally written by James E. Pepper in 1887, where he detailed his production methods and the precise mashbill composition.
This positive hunger for success and innovation, this passionate and agile hands-on mentality, combined with a unique sense for trends and emerging brands. And, of course, a highly motivated team. That’s what the Sierra Madre brand has stood for since 1994. Or, as our tagline perfectly sums it up:
