The Japanese Origin

Ensō Japanese Whisky is a handcrafted pot still blend whisky. In Kiyokawa, there is a story about a boy who lived with his strict and traditional father. In school, his artistic talent was quickly discovered, but his father refused to support it. This did not align with the high goals he had for his son – the boy was meant to follow in his father’s footsteps and become a master blender like him.

Despite this, the boy secretly attended an art school, where he met other participants who were also struggling with imposed ideals. Together, they formed their own artist group, using their expressive works to rebel against superficial values and goals. They expressed this mainly through the continuous use of the Ensō, which, paired with dark color tones, became the group’s signature feature.

Rebellion

Initially, the artist group rebelled quietly, but over time, they brought their protest to the streets through graffiti artworks. When the father discovered that his own son was part of this group, a fierce argument broke out, ultimately leading to them parting ways. As mixology culture gained popularity, a shift occurred in the spirits industry a few years later. This piqued the father’s interest, and he set out to create whiskies that would reveal their full potential in long drinks and cocktails. His colleagues, however, sharply criticized him, insisting that whisky should only be enjoyed neat.

This idealism and stubbornness regarding whisky consumption finally opened the father’s eyes. He realized that his son and the artist group were fighting against the very structures he had adhered to. To honor this artist group, the Ensō Japanese Whisky brand was created, aiming to encourage people to be more creative and adventurous in how they enjoy whisky. All Ensō whiskies, therefore, rebel – just like the artist group did back then – against entrenched ideals.

Sierra Madre is the exclusive importer of Enso in Germany.
