Fee Brothers Bitters are often referred to as the “spice rack behind the bar.” Adding bitters to a drink enhances its aroma, balances its flavors, and introduces new layers of complexity. Our taste buds can distinguish between sour, sweet, bitter, and salty sensations—so the more taste receptors a drink engages, the more intriguing it becomes.
Bitters play a crucial role in crafting the finest cocktails. The first bartender’s manual, How to Mix Drinks, or the Bon Vivant’s Companion, was published in 1862 by “Professor” Jerry Thomas. It featured recipes for punches, sours, slings, and other beverages, but also included 10 recipes specifically for what we now call “cocktails.” The defining element? Bitters—setting these drinks apart from the rest.
