Gran Duque d'Alba

A Name with Tradition

The Gran Duque de Alba Brandy was first introduced in 1945. Documents held by the Medina family, the current owners of Bodegas Williams & Humbert, describe how the winery’s merchant in Madrid at the time was a close friend of the seventh Duke of Alba, Jacobo Fitz-James Stuart y Falcó (father of the current Duchess of Alba). Before launching an exclusive brandy, he asked the Duke if he could name it after him.

After tasting the brandy, the aristocrat was pleasantly impressed and suggested that it would be far more fitting to name the product after his ancestor, the Grand Duke of Alba, Fernando Álvarez de Toledo y Pimentel, who had ennobled the House of Alba and was a significant historical figure. This is confirmed in a written document granting permission to use the name.

Sierra Madre is the exclusive importer of Gran Duque de Alba in Germany.
