Kinahan’s Whiskey is often referred to as “The Original Pioneer of Irish Whiskey.” Founded in 1779, Kinahan’s is not only one of the ten oldest whiskey brands in the world but also a key pioneer in the original production of whiskey in the late 18th and 19th centuries. At a time when barrel aging was not yet a part of whiskey production, Kinahan’s took a groundbreaking step. Whiskey back then was produced as “Poitin” or “Moonshine” and consumed unaged.
This pioneering move introduced barrel aging to the whiskey-making process, a revolutionary change that forever transformed the industry. The introduction of barrel aging allowed for the creation of entirely new flavor experiences and the development of a diverse range of whiskeys, made possible by experimenting with different types of wood.
Kinahan’s willingness to take risks by exploring uncharted territories in the use of different woods and barrel aging paid off. In 1807, the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland, Charles Lennox, was so impressed by Kinahan’s whiskey that he ordered all existing stocks of the whiskey to be reserved exclusively for his official use. Every barrel was marked with the legendary “L.L.”, and today, this unique trademark adorns every bottle of Kinahan’s whiskey.
Later, Kinahan’s earned the Royal Warrant of Appointment from the British Crown, officially becoming a supplier to the royal court. It was also the preferred whiskey of Jerry Thomas, the inventor of American mixology, who mentioned it in his publications in the 1860s. After two centuries of worldwide success, production of Kinahan’s Irish Whiskey ceased in the 1920s, following the massive decline of the Irish whiskey industry, largely due to the Prohibition in the United States. However, in 2014, Kinahan’s reopened its doors with the goal of continuing the legacy and vision of the brand.
