The “forbidden” rum

El Ron Prohibido can be translated as “the forbidden rum.” The name perfectly suits this Mexican spirit in two ways. The first ban was imposed in the early 18th century by the Spanish King Felipe V, which referred to the import of rum. The second ban concerned the production of rum in Mexico. During that time, Spanish ships were constantly unloading goods into what was then New Spain, including sweet wine, which was brought to the colony. Once the wine barrels were emptied, they were refilled with “Chinguirito” – the Mexican rum – and after a brief stop in Havana, Cuba, the barrels made their long journey back to Europe.

The return journey to Spain

The rum aged during its journey back to Spain, absorbing the flavors and aromas of the barrels. This unique flavor quickly gained popularity among the Spaniards, much to the displeasure of local drink producers. They feared a loss in sales, which led the Spanish king to ban production overseas. For nearly a century, the production of this spirit was subject to prosecution. However, the Mexicans resisted the prohibition and continued to illegally produce the “Chinguirito” or the “Habanero” – as the rum was affectionately called due to the stopover in Havana – and shipped their popular product to the European market, primarily Spain.

A unique flavor profile

Through the combination of young and aged rum, El Ron Prohibido, the forbidden rum, develops its distinctive sweet-bitter taste. After aging, the rum is finished with a touch of raisin wine, whose influence, together with the sweet wine barrels, contributes to the harmonious and sensual flavor profile.
