With the onset of Prohibition in the USA, the consumption and sale of spirits became illegal. Only pharmacies were allowed to sell spirits for medicinal purposes. This led to the emergence of an illegal business sector, where supposedly ill individuals obtained spirits with a prescription. Additionally, liquor was secretly sold under the counter.
According to legend, the alchemist Frank M. Farrington was known for the fine spirits he sold under the counter in his New York drugstore. Spiced rum, in particular, was a highly popular spirit of the time. There are even reports that it was sold as a tonic. Drawing on his experience and knowledge, Frank M. Farrington created a distinctive spiced rum in 1922, which quickly became a massive success—the birth of Remedy Rum!
For an entire decade, Remedy was an essential part of lively parties in the secret bars and clubs known as speakeasies across New York. However, with the end of Prohibition in 1933, the demand for illegally produced spirits declined. As a result, Remedy Spiced Rum gradually faded into obscurity over the years.
Almost 100 years later, the story and recipe of this unique rum were rediscovered.
